E-SI (Santo Domingo de Silos) MS 5
Ff. 1r-36v: Part of Ildephonse's De Virginitate Beate Mariae (liber commicus, i.e. of readings). Ff. 36v-39v a sermon for her office (liber sermonum). FF 40r-89v: Part of liber misticus (type of book with chants, readings and prayers of the cathedral ordo, i.e. vespers, matutinum and mass, and, on penintential days only, tertia, nona and sexta) for the Post-Pentecost season (offices of Saint Martin of Tours and Saint Michael Archangel).
Date: The era is specified in f. 82v but different authors read it differently, proposing the following dates: 1009 (Castro Correa, 2013-15; Gómez Mutané, 2001; Millares Carlo et al., 1999; Gónzalez Barrionuevo, 1992; Fernández de la Cuesta, 1983; Randel, 1973; Pinell, 1965; Whitehill and Pérez de Urbel, 1929); 1056 (Díaz y Díaz, 1983); and 1059 (Vivancos, 2007; Ruiz Asencio, 2003; Janini, 1977; Férotin, 1912). The proposed years are problematic since none of them falls on a Sunday or had 21 October falling on a Tuesday, as seems to be indicated by the rubric in f. 82v ("III f[eria] XII kalendas nolbres.")
Origin: It is believed to have been copied at and for the abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos because it has been preserved there for long. Randel (1968, p. 75), after examining its responsorial tones, wrote that "we might conjecture that it is not from Silos-- perhaps from farther west toward León."
Liturgical tradition: A.
Randel responsorial tone tradition: mixed source, both León and [La] Rioja tradition.
